Summer Camp 2024 - Fairytale Week

Summer Camp 2024 - Fairytale Week

This week at our art camp studio was nothing short of enchanting as we dived into the world of fairytales! Here's a look back at the magical adventures and artistic creations our campers experienced.

Crafting Ceramic Magic Wands
We started the week by channeling our inner wizards and fairies, painting our very own ceramic magic wands. Each camper had the opportunity to glaze their pottery, learning about the magical transformation that takes place in the firing process. Anticipation filled the week as the campers waited for the plain ceramics to turn into colorful, shimmering wands, each unique and full of character.

Exploring Surrealism and Stained Glass Art
Next, we delved into the surreal world of Salvador Dali and the timeless beauty of Louis Comfort Tiffany's stained glass. As our campers explored surrealism, we wove together a lesson which culminated in a collaborative project where everyone contributed to a collective stained glass image. Each camper added hand-drawn elements in real-time, resulting in a template that we used to create personalized stained glass portraits. It was thrilling to see the campers' creativity shine through in both the collaborative piece and their individual artworks.

Immersing in Post-Impressionism
Our journey continued with an exploration of post-impressionism. We focused on the bold colors, expressive brushstrokes, and distinct lines of this art movement, with special attention to the works of Vincent van Gogh. Campers painted scenes from their favorite fairytales using Van Gogh's impasto technique, employing unconventional tools like the backs of paintbrushes, cardboard edges, and forks. The resulting artworks were vibrant and full of texture, each one a beautifully unique interpretation of a beloved story.

Creating Mythological Creatures
Shifting gears to mythology, our campers learned about various mythological creatures and their fascinating origins. Inspired by these mythical beings, they crafted their own creatures by combining everyday animals with fantastical elements like wings, tails, horns, extra heads, and multiple eyes. The creativity was boundless, resulting in a menagerie of imaginative and whimsical creatures.

Modern Spin on Magic Mirror on the Wall
On our final day, we introduced the campers to the famous Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. They learned about his quest to distill art into its purest forms, evolving from realistic landscapes to abstract grids with a limited color palette. Taking advantage of this perfect opportunity for alliteration, our campers created “Mondrian Magic Mirror Mosaics.” They meticulously planned their designs using a limited palette of colored tiles, resulting in stunning abstract masterpieces that reflected Mondrian’s influence.

A Magical Week of Art and Imagination
This week was filled with magical adventures and enchanting stories, sparking the creativity and imagination of every camper. Each activity allowed our campers to explore different art movements and techniques in a fun and engaging way. We can’t wait to see what artistic journeys await us in the coming weeks!

Thank you to all the campers for their enthusiasm and to the parents for their support. Here’s to more weeks of creativity and magic!
