This week at Earth Arts was an absolute delight, as we explored our food-themed activities and projects.
Sweet Beginnings: Painted Dessert Ceramics
We kicked off the week with painted dessert ceramics, diving into the culture of afternoon tea and planning our own tea party to cap off the week. Taking those fired cupcake plates out of the kiln was even more thrilling than baking real cupcakes!
Art Basel and Comedic Creations
Next up, our campers were introduced to Art Basel and the unique experiences each exhibition brings. We discussed the controversial “Comedian” by Maurizio Cattelan, displayed at Art Basel Miami in 2019 and sold for $120,000. Our campers created their own versions using clay, meticulously sculpting and shaping, resulting in some comedically absurd masterpieces!
Pop Art Inspiration: Andy Warhol and Linocuts
Inspired by the banana from “Comedian,” we then explored the world of Pop Art and Andy Warhol. Our campers learned about linocut techniques and created their own repetitive prints of food items. This project was really fun, and the campers produced incredible prints with their unique linocut designs.
Shadows and light with Wayne Thiebaud's Vibrant Desserts
Continuing with the theme of repetitive food imagery, we delved into the vibrant world of Wayne Thiebaud. Our campers studied his dynamic depictions of desserts and his distinctive use of shadows and light. They then created their own vibrant food artworks.
Fruitful Creations in Still Life
On the final day of camp, we wrapped up food week with still life and oil pastel techniques. We reviewed notable still life fruit paintings, from Paul Cézanne to Caravaggio, and our campers arranged their own fruit bowls. They sketched with charcoal and blended oil pastels to build up intensity and richness in their compositions.
A Taste of Success
We concluded this delectable week with our much-anticipated afternoon tea party, enjoying macarons and madeleines on our very own dessert plates. The campers also got to eat all the fruit used for their still life setups.
The cherry on top was when each camper had a turn on real pottery wheels! With the help of our wonderful instructor, Skylar, every child managed to shape a small bowl. We were blown away by the level of enthusiasm and effort each camper displayed!
This week was a feast of fun and creativity, and our smorgasbord of projects was truly a recipe for success. Once again, we are so proud of these little artists and cannot wait for next week’s adventure.
