š Ocean Week Recap at Earth Arts! š
This week, our young artists immersed themselves in ocean-inspired artmaking while exploring important art techniques and traditions. Campers practiced Pointillism by glazing starfish-shaped bisque pieces (spoon rests, trinket trays, and sponge dishes) with layered dots of underglaze applied using Q-tipsāan exercise in color theory and patience inspired by artists like Georges Seurat.
They handbuilt Bioluminescent Sea Anemone Luminaries from clay, studying form and texture while imagining how light and sculpture can interact, turning marine biology into glowing ceramic art.
With Brad the Crab, students learned about simple engineering and design by creating articulated paper crabs with moving joints held together by brass brads, introducing them to mechanical connections in art.
We also explored Japanese art history through Katsushika Hokusaiās "The Great Wave off Kanagawa", constructing dimensional paper wave sculptures from thin blue strips to understand movement and rhythm in composition, and folding origami boats to complete a scenic homage to Hokusaiās famous print.
Students molded their own Carnival Fish from Model Magic, learning handbuilding basics and color application while personalizing their imaginative āpets.ā To finish the week, everyone designed and decorated portfolio bags to carefully transport their projects home, taking pride in their artistry and reflecting on their creative growth.
It was an inspiring week of hands-on learning, creative exploration, and deep dives into art history and technique!
